Although Brooklyn and New York City have a history of segregation and racism, they also have a diverse history of progress and activism. This trolley tour, led by Green-Wood’s Education and Public Programs Coordinator Tiva Baloi, will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent Black Brooklynites who were pioneers in diverse fields from art to activism, music to medicine, realty to Wall Street.

You’ll visit the monuments of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the innovative artist of the 1970s and 80s; Grace Nail Johnson and James Weldon Johnson, civil rights activists and prominent participants in the Harlem Renaissance; Elizabeth Gloucester, a wealthy abolitionist who supported the Underground Railroad; and others who made lasting marks in the ongoing struggle for progress. The tour will provide a unique opportunity to learn about the contributions of these remarkable individuals and their impact on Brooklyn’s history.
