From a once-thriving medieval community to one of the smallest Jewish communities in Europe today, with only 150 Jews remaining, Slovenia’s Jewish community has survived cruel medieval expulsions and the ravages of the wars of the twentieth century, only to find itself eroding even more during subsequent years of socialist rule. In this live, virtual tour we visit sites within Ljubljana’s old Jewish Quarter. We will explore Slovenia’s Jewish history, culture, and heritage. Our guide will also discuss Jewish life in a Christian society and talk about the city’s notable Jewish residents. On our tour, our guide will share how some Slovenian Jews survived WWII, and what happened to the Jewish community during the communist regime in the former Yugoslavia.
