Join us as we travel to Denver, Colorado, for a tour of the Clyfford Still Museum, a dense, cantilevered, two-story building of richly worked concrete that uses natural light designed specifically to display Clyfford Still’s work. Among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists, Clyfford Still (1904–1980) thought the best way to experience his art was by seeing it all in one place. The Clyfford Still Museum collection represents more than 93 percent of the artist’s lifetime output, including approximately 3,125 works.

The museum’s director, Joyce Tsai, joined by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works whose firm designed the museum, will lead a tour highlighting the museum's architectural features and materials that perfectly feature Still’s vibrant and immersive works. The tour begins outdoors under a canopy of trees, then transitions upwards from the darkness of the lobby and lower level to the light of the upper-level galleries, where a series of luminous rooms respond to the changing scales and proportions of Still’s artworks.

About the Speakers:
Joyce Tsai is the Director of the Clyfford Still Museum and is an internationally acclaimed curator, scholar, and teacher. She arrived at CSM from the University of Iowa, where she served as Chief Curator of the Stanley Museum of Art and Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Art and Art History. Dr. Tsai is trained as an intellectual historian and art historian: Princeton, AB (History, cum laude); Johns Hopkins University, MA (German), PhD (Art History and Humanities). She has published extensively in the field of technical art history with conservators and conservation scientists at the National Gallery of Art, Harvard Art Museums, Guggenheim, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

Architect, educator, and principal of Allied Works, Brad Cloepfil has realized diverse projects across the U.S. and internationally. Over the past two decades, Cloepfil has received widespread acclaim for his work on creative workplaces, academic and cultural institutions, and for crafting powerful spaces for art and interaction. A native of Oregon, Cloepfil’s body of work is as informed by the landscape and history of place as it is by his formal training. His architecture pairs an intensive focus on the specific character of each project with an understanding of the transformative possibilities of space, light, form, and material. He holds degrees from the University of Oregon and Columbia University, is the recipient of numerous design awards, and has lectured and taught widely throughout Europe, Asia and North America.
