The International Court of Justice’s 2025 advisory opinion, which establishes the legal obligation for states to combat climate change, made the charge clear: We must transform infrastructure to ensure the planet’s future for all. But what does a postcarbon future look like? How can the infrastructure of that future serve to not only repair and restore environments but reimagine the current systems that fuel the climate crisis and its inequitable impacts?

A continuation of the Architecture, Planning, and International Law series and co-organized with the Center for Brooklyn History and the Climate and Community Institute, this event will present a selection of case studies around the world featured in Building Postcarbon Futures: Land, Justice, and Energy Transitions (2026) by scholar Billy Fleming. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Fleming, with leading experts at the intersection of climate policy and the built environment to draw a roadmap for building climate justice in our cities, landscapes, and communities.

Panelists include Daniel Aldana Cohen, assistant professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of its Socio-Spatial Climate Collaborative; Keller Easterling, designer, writer, and the Enid Storm Dwyer Professor of Architecture at Yale University; and Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò, associate professor of philosophy at Georgetown University and a fellow at the Climate and Community Institute.
