Join Jacqueline Paul and Hanna-Marie Monga in a talk about how Indigenous youth in Aotearoa are reimagining homes, lands, and relationships.

Generation Kāinga is a kaupapa Māori project, Māori-led and on Māori terms, based at Pūrangakura in Aotearoa New Zealand. It works with rangatahi, young Māori, to reimagine and rebuild kāinga. The aim is for Aotearoa New Zealand to be the best place in the world for rangatahi and their whānau to live.

Māori have always understood rangatahi as critical agents of change. Here they are co-researchers, not subjects. They shaped the questions, co-designed the work, and are already transforming kāinga for their peers, their whānau and their wider communities. That work is shared through wānanga (gatherings held on ancestral lands), storytelling, photography and videography.

Jacqueline Paul and Hanna-Marie Monga will speak about Generation Kāinga as a whole, the research behind it and what rangatahi are changing. Ūkaipō, showing alongside them, is one part of that work.

Ūkaipō means to be fed at the breast at night. It is the source that nourishes, and that holds us to whenua, land, and whakapapa, the genealogies that connect us. The projection moves in three parts. Ū: intergenerational nourishment, in photographs from wānanga on ancestral lands. Kai: collective abundance and the conditions that shape wellbeing, in photographs chosen and shared by rangatahi. Pō: activating aspirations, in videos by rangatahi partners.

Generation Kāinga is co-led by Professor Jenny Lee-Morgan and Maia Ratana, and funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Creative direction by No Six Media.
