How can we rethink the future of our cities by transforming what already exists?

As the built environment faces growing challenges related to climate change, resource use, and urban development, architecture is increasingly turning its attention toward renovation, adaptation, and reuse. Building Less, Transforming More brings together Nordic and American perspectives on how we can move beyond demolition and replacement toward a more responsible approach to building.

Presented by the Nordic Consulates General in New York and the OBEL Foundation as part of Archtober 2026, this programme explores how existing buildings can become resources for creativity, cultural continuity, and long-term value.

The afternoon features two connected conversations. Nordic Practice Dialogue brings together architectural voices from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway to discuss how transformation and reuse are shaping contemporary architectural practice. The second session, From Practice to Systemic Change, expands the discussion to examine the broader conditions that influence the future of the built environment — including policy, investment, regulation, and public responsibility.

Rather than focusing solely on sustainability as a technical challenge, Building Less, Transforming More explores transformation as an architectural and cultural opportunity: how we can care for what already exists, create new value from inherited structures, and imagine cities built around adaptation rather than replacement.

Join architects, designers, policymakers, researchers, and anyone interested in the future of our cities for an afternoon of conversation and exchange during Archtober 2026.

Presented by the Consulates General of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in New York. Made possible with support from the OBEL Foundation.
