MacArthur Award Winner Tonika Johnson

Join Archtober Newburgh for an inspiring keynote presentation by Chicago-based artist, photographer, and MacArthur Fellow Tonika Johnson. Presented in partnership with the James Marston Fitch Foundation and UAP, this special event examines how art, storytelling, photography, and community engagement can illuminate the lasting impacts of segregation, disinvestment, and neighborhood identity.

Drawing from her acclaimed projects—including Folded Map, Don't Go, Inequity for Sale, and UnBlocked Englewood—Johnson will share how historical planning and housing policies continue to shape communities today. A keynote presentation followed by a moderated conversation will invite attendees to consider the role of storytelling in fostering civic engagement, challenging place-based stigma, and inspiring community-led change.
