The story of how President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the American public responded to the rise of fascism across Europe and Asia is much more complicated than the narrative of isolationism traditionally taught to students. Historian William I. Hitchcock joins David M. Rubenstein to discuss the complexities of the American reaction to authoritarianism, and the gradual efforts that a vast network of activists took to influence Roosevelt’s hardening stance against global fascism.
