In recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the Archtober Building of the Day is the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American – New York (NMAI-NY). The NMAI-NY is one of three facilities that comprise the National Museum of the American Indian. The NMAI-NY features exhibition galleries, public program spaces, an imagiNATIONS Activity Center, a museum store, and a café. The museum has been housed in the Beaux Arts style Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in Lower Manhattan since 1994.

The focus of the tour will be how the National Museum of the American Indian has established its own architectural identity within a landmark Beaux Arts building over time, beginning with the original 1994 renovation and continuing through additional capital projects between 2006 and 2020.

The tour will be lead by Duane Blue Spruce (Laguna and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo). Blue Spruce is an architect and Public Spaces Planning Coordinator at the NMAI and was the NMAI’s architectural representative on the projects included on the tour.

Architect: Cass Gilbert (1907)
