MAS is celebrating design excellence in New York City with our 2021 MASterworks Awards! We have curated a selection of in person explorations and online in-conversations with this year’s honored projects.
On Thursday, October 28, starting at 8:30 AM, join MAS for a visit to the 34th Ave. Open Street in Jackson Heights, which has served as a model for communities and organizers citywide. NYC Open Streets was specially recognized by the 2021 MASterworks Jury as a creative open space policy intervention when New Yorkers needed it the most. Hear from Kyle Gorman, Emily Weidenhof, Andrew Ronan, and Jessica Cronstein from NYCDOT, as well as Jim Burke from the 34th Avenue Open Streets Coalition, starting with a morning caffeine fix at a local café. Capacity is limited.
Since it launched, NYC Open Streets has added 80+ miles of streets transformed into open space for New Yorkers, while also playing a pivotal role in the recovery of the City from COVID-19. Open Streets are used for play, dining, gathering, exercise, and myriad other uses that promote the use of streets as public space. The program also has dramatically transformed the urban landscape in New York City, significantly enhancing the quality of life for city residents, prioritizing pedestrian and cycling activity as well as benefitting urban livability and resiliency.
