Katherine Miranda, "King and Queen (Adam and Eve)", 2020. Acrylic and Image Transfer Collage on Bustelo, 18.5 in x 9 inches. Courtesy of the artist.

Mining their familial history and lived experiences as a non-binary Latinx person in the Bronx, 2021 New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellow Katherine Miranda will create a large-scale, sculptural shrine referencing a photograph of their maternal grandparents seated on chairs and honoring the story of their relationship. Capturing the color palette of the garden during the Winter Workspace, and stories of the resilient wisteria clinging to the building’s exterior walls, the installation combines sentimental images, cultural signifiers and materials found and recycled from the grounds to create a space for contemplation and reflection.
