A new series, organized by the AIANY Architecture Dialogue Committee in collaboration with the AIANY Future of Practice and AIANY Global Dialogue Committees, will feature emerging and mid-career global talent discussing global design issues. The first program of this series will focus on Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, where two young architects—Tatu Gatere in Kenya and Christian Benimana in Rwanda—are providing much-needed training and education to African youth in design and construction. They will be joined at the Center for Architecture by Frances Halsband, FAIA, whose firm has recently completed a healthcare facility in Uganda, and Joseph Mizza, whose non-profit foundation builds and operates schools in Zambia. The conversation will focus on in-country training and education in Africa to shape projects that are sustainable and reflect local culture, regional materials, climate, and available resources. These topics will also be viewed in the contexts of empowerment and the impact of the built environment on human rights.
