In a conversation with Barry Bergdoll, David Chipperfield will speak about the work of his eponymous practice, in particular the extensive experience in restoration and repurposing buildings worldwide. From the renovation of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin to the approach for transforming the 1014 Fifth Ave. townhouse in Manhattan, the practice prioritizes re-use not only for vital reasons of sustainability but also for the socio-cultural values of continuity and identity in increasingly homogenized urban environments. David Chipperfield was born in London in 1953 and founded David Chipperfield Architects in 1985. He has developed a design methodology that is now used across four offices in London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai. In addition to design work, David Chipperfield has taught and lectured worldwide. In 2012 he curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale under the title Common Ground and he was the 2020 guest editor of Italian design magazine Domus. Barry Bergdoll is Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University and the former Chief Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. A specialist in the history of modern architecture, he curated numerous exhibitions at MoMA, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Musée d’Orsay, and other venues, including Mies In Berlin (2001), Bauhaus 1919–1933: Workshops for Modernity (2009-2010), Latin America in Construction : Architecture 1955-1980 (2015) and Frank Lloyd Wright at 150 : Unpacking the Archive (2017). 1014: Past and Future comprises a weekend of architecture, culture and community. The program will feature an exhibition and talks at 1014 5th Avenue and guided walking tours in the Upper East Side neighborhood. Accessibility Statement: Unfortunately, 1014 Fifth Avenue needs to be refurbished and is not fully accessible in its current stage. We apologize to our guests and kindly ask you to contact j.stubbs@1014.nyc if you need further information or assistance. We will do our best to enable everyone to join us.
